The smartphone makes us more stupid, even when we are not using it?
The smartphone has become an indispensable tool for most people, because we provide a constant connection to the rest of the world and many of the information available through websites and apps. But what happens if we were to be prevented from using it?
A new study conducted by the University of Texas has measured the stimulation of the brain of more than 700 users who are accustomed to using their smartphones every day. The participants were asked to complete various tests to measure their cognitive abilities and the amount of information that their brain was able to handle. Of these 700 participants, some have had to leave their smartphone in a pocket, the other on the desk in front of them, and still others in a room far away from the place of the test. All participants had the order not to use your smartphone during the test.
The researchers observed that subjects invited to leave your smartphone in another room, they did record better results than those who had the smartphone in your pocket. These have got to their time, scores better than the people who had the smartphone on the desk.
This means that the mere presence of your smartphone nearby, or even within sight, in some way, it limits the potential of the brain, for a variety of reasons that are also linked to the unconscious: “The mere presence of smartphone can actively impede our ability to process information and to carry out activities, even if we do not use it,” explains professor Adrian Ward, in charge of the test, “... among other things, the participants were never distracted by notifications on their smartphone, saw that they were all disabled. The mere presence of the smartphone in the vicinity was sufficient to reduce their cognitive ability“.
In short, if you have something important to do... better leave your smartphone at home!
