Star Wars: Johnson explains the absence of Obi-Wan Kenobi

Published on Dec 20, 2017

ATTENTION: If you have not yet seen Star Wars: The last Jedi this is not the article you are looking for!

One of the most beloved characters in the Star Wars saga has always been Obi-Wan Kenobi. The character played by Alec Guinness before, and Ewan McGregor, then, is central in the myth of the saga, having been present during the important phases of the fall of the Republic, in addition to launch Luke Skywalker in the ways of the Force.

Its importance is the reason why some fans are surprised that you are not to be seen again, the spectrum of the Force Obi-Wan (as happened in The empire strikes back and return of The Jedi), but Rian Johnson, director of the last of The Jedi, he explained to The Playlist that this meeting would not have been exciting enough for you, because, for obvious reasons, Luke would have had to meet the younger version of Obi-Wan instead of Alec Guinness.

“Believe me. I would have loved to see Ewan McGregor in the film, but it was a problem of story. The original relationship with Obi-Wan would have had meaning if Alec Guinness was still among us. But we never saw Luke Skywalker interact with the young Obi-Wan, then there would have been less free emotional and it would have indeed seemed a little strange”

For this reason, it is preferred to have recourse to the appearance of Yoda. Not only because Frank OZ is still in business, but because the crew was able to re-create the character in the version seen in The empire strikes back. And here are then appear the small Jedi green in the moment of maximum emotional tension, for Luke Skywalker, exactly when a help of his old teachers was necessary.

Obi-Wan, however, could still return in the next Star Wars movie. We do not know which ideas have in the mind of J. J. Abrams for Episode IX, but we do know of the items that they want Stephen Daldry as a director of a spin off focused on Obi-Wan Kenobi. You have to see how this project fits within the Star Wars Stories.
