Spotify and Apple are in talks to allow Siri to play content from Spotify

Spotify and Apple are discussing about a potential “truce” which would allow Siri to play songs, playlists and albums to Spotify via voice commands of the users of the iPhone, reports The Information.

Apple iOS 13, has introduced changes SiriKit, which allow Siri to play music, podcasts, audiobooks and radio as a third-party app, which seems to be the feature of which the two companies have discussed.

The changes to the SiriKit will allow Spotify and other developers to integrate support for Siri into their app, allowing users to control audio playback with the commands Siri. Users will be able to use commands such as “Hey Siri, play God s Plan from Spotify” instead of Apple's Music.

Apple features Siri similar to the messaging app of a third party, which allow you to use the commands ask Siri to send messages using WhatsApp and other apps. The commands that Siri will also work with app-sharing, training, payments, photos, and VoIP third-party.

If Apple and Spotify were to reach an agreement on the new feature, it is expected that Apple's Music will be the music streaming service the default on Apple devices when users ask Siri to play music, according to sources who have spoken to The Information.

The possible agreement between Apple and Spotify comes after a complaint by antitrust march Spotify in the european Union, where the behemoth of streaming music, he said that the rules of Apple's App Store “limit choice and stifle innovation at the expense of the user experience“.

In his complaint, Spotify has spoken about the 30% commission from Apple for third-party apps in the App Store, the CEO of Spotify Daniel Ek said to give Apple an “unfair advantage” for Apple's Music. Ek has also complained of “restrictions to the limitation of the experience” of Apple blocking Spotify and other competitors out of services such as Siri.

The complaint of Spotify has led to a formal investigation on the practices of Apple's App Store from the european Commission for competition, which is in progress.

On his website, “Time to Play Fair” where it outlines its dispute with Apple, Spotify has recently changed the formulation that reflects the changes of SiriKit in iOS 13. Previously read as follows: “Apple will not allow us to be on the HomePod and definitely will not allow us to get in touch with Siri to play your favorite songs“.

After an update, the website now says the following: “Only recently, Apple announced that it will allow us to connect with Siri to play your songs ... but no mention of our name and HomePod will be set automatically on Apple's Music. ” The changes to the formulation suggest that Spotify will implement effectively the support Siri, but the company still seems dissatisfied, and the inability to set Spotify as a music service the default on Apple devices.
