Qualcomm, Samsung, and Huawei announce new MPEG codec-5 EVC
Qualcomm Incorporated, Samsung Electronics and Huawei Technologies Co. have announced the arrival of the new MPEG-5 Essential Video Coding (EVC). MPEG-5 EVC will offer greater efficiency than previous standards. The companies involved talking about a higher compression of at least 25% compared to hevc analyzer and without any loss in image quality.
The fields of use provided are numerous: in addition to the videos in Ultra HD with HDR, one also speaks of 8K (where the greater compression is essential in order not to occupy too much bandwidth in the streaming), virtual reality and augmented reality. The three companies, the promoters also believe that MPEG-5 EVC will be very useful if matched to the networks 5G, so you can convey streaming content with high quality with all the benefits offered by the best compression.
The specifications of the codec were laid down in the form of a Final Draft International Standard (FDIS) at the end of April by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) as ISO/IEC 23094-1. Samsung, Qualcomm, and Huawei will announce the respective terms of the license not later than two years from the date of publication of the FDIS. The three giants are committed to establish terms fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory.The top of Huawei at the best price?
