Qualcomm: “our priority is to launch as soon as the iPhone 5G”

Apple and Qualcomm are working to launch a new iPhone 5G as quickly as possible, said president of Qualcomm Cristiano Amon at Summit Tech Snapdragon this week.

The main objective of the renewed relationship of Qualcomm, Apple is launching the iPhone in time, with various rumors suggesting that the iPhone 5G Apple will arrive in the fall of 2020. “The number one priority of this relationship with Apple is to launch the iPhone 5G as quickly as possible. This is the priority,” said Amon.

Given the need to get the phone at just the right moment, Amon said that even if the first iPhone 5G will use the Qualcomm modem, it may not include all of the RF front-end of Qualcomm. A RF front-end includes the circuits between components such as the antenna and the receiver, and it is important to increase the signal strength from various networks.

As highlighted in PCMag, Qualcomm has defined its brand-new chip modem Snapdragon a “modem system-RF', suggesting that the output of the signal better requires components RF front-end created by Qualcomm.

Apple would probably use its technology and its components together with the Qualcomm modem in its range iPhone 2020, that is something that the company has also done in previous years, but the colossus of Cupertino will have to use the modules the antenna at millimetre-wave Qualcomm.

At this moment, the rumors suggest that all the iPhone of 2020 will support the 5G, although a recent report has indicated that not all of the iPhone could support both mmWave sub-6GHz 5G, the two types of technology 5G that are in the works.

The high-end devices may be able to take advantage of mmWave and sub-6GHz 5G, while the cheaper devices Apple will be restricted to the networks in sub-6GHz.

mmWave technology is the 5G faster, but given its limited scope, it is likely to be limited to the main cities and urban areas. Sub-6GHz 5G is slower than the mmWave 5G, but will be able to be used in suburban areas and rural areas and provide you with speeds in excess of 4G LTE.
