Osram Opto Semiconductors new biometric solutions for smartphones

Published on Feb 24, 2018

Osram Opto Semiconductors has presented at the MWC 18 new innovative solutions that provide applications for visible light, and invisible in the next generation of mobile devices.

Many of the technologies present on smartphones are based on the light. The illumination of the display and the flash are the applications more obvious, but not to be forgotten is the technological developments in infrared and laser exploited for example by Apple for its facial-recognition system. In addition to this, we also have the recognition of the gestures, or the scan of the iris used by other companies.

The biometric identification of the user is radically changing the level of security of mobile devices. The scan of the iris, and facial recognition are among the biometric methods of identification of the user, today the most reliable and secure. Suffice it to say that, by now, have become an alternative to the complex password management for the security of mobile devices, to access control and to the more and more checks for payments and other financial transactions.

Biometrics is clearly the use of specific human characteristics, such as specific structures within the iris, facial features or fingerprints. The sensors identify these characteristics and compare them with the biometric data previously stored in the memory. For reliable operation in mobile devices, is to scan the iris and face recognition, require special additional LEDS with infrared rays to illuminate the area. This technology is already used in access control systems, with most of the countries that adopt in the controls at the borders.

The scanner of the iris are one of the most reliable and secure biometric identification. When a user wants to access a device, the scanner of the iris illuminate the eye with infrared light: the software then analyzes an image of the pattern of the iris, which is unique to each individual. The facial recognition systems identify characteristics that are independent from facial expressions between the length and the width of the nose, the depth of the eye sockets and the shape of the cheekbones. The supplemental lighting of the face with infrared light provides a facial recognition extremely reliable in any time. The block rate of authorized users is below 1%, and the probability that a wrong person can gain access to the device is about one in a million.

The biometric measurements are commonly found in equipment for health, is increasingly common that people monitorizzino their levels of form and fitness. The technologies that they use today to measure their health were discovered by medicine not long ago. Thanks to the optical technology, almost all of the fitness trackers have the ability to measure heart rate. The high-efficiency LEDS play an essential role in implementing these solutions based on compact sensors and high-efficiency.
