HomeKit: Apple wants to regain ground in the field of devices for the smart home

Although HomeKit has grown significantly in recent years, it remains behind Google Home and platforms Alexa-Amazon in terms of the number of compatible devices. Apparently the company is seeking ways to encourage more manufacturers to create accessories HomeKit and may even release accessories for the smart home.

The report by Bloomberg suggests that there is a corporate initiative much more great to try to convince Apple to capture a greater portion of the market for smart homes.

Reportedly, the initiative is led by Andreas Gal, that Apple has hired as part of an acquisition of Silk Labs at the end of 2018. Apple is trying to design solutions that facilitate the adoption of HomeKit on the part of the producers of accessories for the smart home of the third-party.

Bloomberg also says that the group is also studying whether Apple should produce accessories for the smart homes such as lights or locks. Earlier it was reported that Apple is working on a new model of the HomePod for 2020, a speaker with a voice assistant smaller with a lower starting price.

A potential area of interest for the team and Apple's hardware are the security cameras of the home which could integrate with the upcoming features of iOS 13 called HomeKit Secure Recording. This will allow the cameras HomeKit to automatically load the clip on the iCloud account of a user, in an encrypted form. Bloomberg says that a few years ago, Apple was trying to achieve a “wide range” of accessories for the home, but the development has been shelved.

Apple has made it easier for companies to create accessories HomeKit in the last year, going from a form of hardware authentication to a system that is purely software. However, some producers continue to complain of the fact that the addition of HomeKit is expensive and that the certification process for Apple is to slow.

The only device in the smart home of the Apple, the HomePod, and has been praised for its sound quality, but sales have been slow because of its premium price next to competing devices much cheaper than Amazon, and Google. In addition to the rumors of a cheaper version in 2020, Apple will add soon also feature key software to improve the use of the product, i.e. the transfer of music, and profiles voice multi-user requests Siri.
