Google Maps, begin the public testing for the navigation AR
Google Maps has enabled for a limited number of users (mainly Local Guides) the mode augmented reality for navigation step-by-step walk. The feature was announced during The Google I/O 2018, and it is not yet completely ready: the colossus of Mountain View says simply that we still have time, and do not bind to the exact timetable. But the wait may still be quite long: Google has not yet taken final decisions, even on basic things such as the appearance of the navigation arrows and indicators.
Among those who have had the chance to test it in the preview, there was David Pierce of the Wall Street Journal. There is also a short video, visible in the original article (link to SOURCE). The quick overview is that the mode AR sovraimprime arrows, indicators, and instructions virtual to the real world, shown on the screen of your smartphone thanks to the camera.
It is not, clearly, a navigation system that you use constantly: the app indicates when you can store the device, to save power and data. But it has the advantage of being extremely precise: when you start navigation in AR, the user must not frame as many parts of the surrounding environment as possible, so to find elements of well-known references (signs, buildings, special...) that allow to determine the exact location (much more than allow the tolerance of the GPS receivers; we say broad lines of a few centimeters instead of a few meters). One of the most desired, 2018, topped only by the Mate 20 the Pro?
