France accuses Apple of not having helped her to develop the app StopCOVID

France is preparing to test its app COVID-19 “StopCovid” on may 11th, coinciding with the beginning of Phase 2 in the Country. On Tuesday, the government has publicly attacked Apple, in an attempt to change its policies before the launch of the app.

“Apple could help us to make your application work even better on the iPhone,” said the French minister of digital technology Cedric Or to BFM Business TV, as reported by Reuters. “They have wanted to do it.”

As in the case of the app in the Uk and some other, the French version is developed without the use of the API created by Apple and Google. The app requires the use of Bluetooth to communicate with other devices, but Apple prevents apps running in the background to transfer data Bluetooth, making the third party apps less effective.

Instead of using the API, Apple-Google, that could potentially run in the background thanks to the future integration in the operating systems iOS and Android, the France want Apple to change its policy in the field of Bluetooth. Initially, the government had asked the company to Cupertino to do so before 20 April, followed by a similar stress on the 30 April by the carrier, Orange, but so far Apple has refused to change its policy.

Cedric, Or has attempted to deface an Apple during the interview, stating:

“We are in a period in which all were mobilized to fight the epidemic and I am sorry that a big company that is doing so well economically, is not helping the government in this crisis “.

Apple generally prevents access Bluetooth to the app in the background because of the implications of security and privacy, something that is also taken into account in the API in the development phase. Because the technology uses a decentralized system, and Apple and Google have the control over the data that can be transmitted and received via the Bluetooth API, this is considered to be a method to be the most private and secure way to obtain the same goal of monitoring, without weakening too much the Bluetooth security.

The minister continued by minimizing the importance of Apple in the fight COVID-19:

“We believe that the supervision of the health care system, the fight against the coronavirus, is the responsibility of governments and not necessarily of large american companies”.
