Interviewed by Fandom, Denis Villeneuve (Arrival, Blade Runner 2049), director of the new transposition of the Dunes, has stated: “most of the ideas in the Star Wars saga come from the Dunes, for this reason it will be a challenge to make a remake. My ambition is to make the Star Wars films that I have ever seen. In a certain sense, it is a Star Wars for adults. We'll see.”

When asked if his version has similarities with that ever made by Jodorowsky, Villeneuve answered: “No, because Jodorowsky is a visionary one. He has a unique vision and very strong. I am a human being, which is totally different. Try it, it would be very presumptuous and arrogant on my part. I would like to talk with him. I would like to meet him for a long time. I think it is a fabulous director and I would have liked to see the Dunes. I think it would have been a film by Jodorowski very unique. We have the same vision for the Dunes? I doubt it. On the contrary, I am sure, because he is unique.”

He added: “our idea is to start the transposition from the first book.”

The academy award winning scriptwriter Eric Roth (Forrest Gump, Ali, Munich, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) has been hired by Legendary Entertainment to write the reboot of the Dunes.

As previously announced, the Legendary has acquired the rights to the film and television of the Dunes, the iconic science-fiction novel by Frank Herbert, published in 1965, and was the progenitor of a series of six novels.

The Filmmakers would have in pipeline projects for cinema and tv-based Dune that should be produced by Thomas Tull, Mary Parent and Cale Boyter, with Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt, Kim Herbert as executive producers.

The novel has already been translated in the 1984 film, directed by David Lynch, with Kyle MacLachlan, Sting and Patrick Stewart. In 2000, the tv miniseries Dune the fate of the universe, with Giancarlo Giannini and William Hurt, which has had a sequel in 2002, children of Dune with James McAvoy.

Dune tells the story of Paul Atreides, whose family accepts control of a desert-like planet Arrakis, source of the precious Spice melange. Control of Arrakis is contested by the other noble families. When Paul and his family are betrayed, the protagonist will lead a rebellion to regain control of Arrakis.
