Craig Federighi: “Great success for Swift Open Source!”
When Swift became Open Source, the senior vice president of software Craig Federighi has released a series of interviews, as the last of the recently granted to The Talk Show.
Federighi opened the interview by stating that Swift has become the programming language that is more “active” on Github and that, for this reason, the team at Apple responsible of the system is that busy with absolute with the developers, than any other team in the company.
The manager Apple has also explained that a lot of in-house programmers at Apple are excited about using Swift: “The team that works with iCloud has started to use Swift for many of its projects, while the programmers of OS X are working to convert their to the Swift. The different teams, I recognize what is practical and what is not, and find a way to use Swift where it can”.
Federighi, has confirmed that one of the advantages of Swift Open Source is the ability to teach it easily in schools around the world, since the programming may be the future of many guys. The negative points of this choice? For Federighi, none: “Apple has wanted to make this open source language for use in many contexts, also external to Apple, and not related to our business”.
