Considering the basic plot of the film and the TV series of Joss Whedon – an unbroken line of succession of the slayer that you will pass the witness for thousands of years – it might seem strange to “reinvent” Buffy, instead of just follow a Hunter's different.

But the author Donny Cates (Venom, the Guardians of The Galaxy), chooses one story in particular, certainly familiar to fans who love to discuss holes in the plot of Buffy the vampire Slayer: this is what is known among the theorists as The Lost Slayer (The Hunter Lost).

When he was interviewed during the Thought Bubble Comic con, Cates has mentioned the hole in the lore of Buffy that has always wanted to treat:

“At the end of season 1 Buffy dies and then comes back, right? So we have Kendra. And then Kendra died, and so we have Faith. At the end of season 5 or 6, when Buffy dies again and then comes back. Who is being called? Where is it? Where is this new Hunter?

You might say: ‘Oh, well, Faith is still around, but this does not count. Because Buffy says so explicitly all of the potential Slayers that if she dies, one of them will be called. So these are the rules, right? If one dies, another is called. Then, where is the battle lost? This is a story that I've always wanted to tell...”.

In fact, the problems begin to arise when fans ask why the Huntress was able to retain his abilities from the Hunter, even once it came back to life after death, because that is what is really “transmitted” to those who happens when it dies.

This is one of the main reasons for the supposition of Cates is difficult to refute: if the power Buffy has been passed to a new Hunter when it is dead for the first time, which rule provides the series to explain the fact that this time his power will not be transmitted?

While Buffy does not say explicitly to the potential Slayers that his power will be passed to one of them, this detail can be inferred. Mainly, because Buffy says so explicitly to Giles in season 6, episode 22, Abyss:

“It was like... when I exit from that grave, I left something behind. Part of me... I don't know why I came back... it Was my time, Giles. Someone would have taken my place. So why is that?“.

It's certainly a point to be clarified, and Cates would be happy to do so!
