Avengers: Endgame – the writers lament the death of a character in particular

Published on Nov 24, 2019

In good or in evil, Avengers: Endgame the film was particularly exciting and full of twists. But the realization of the last chapter of the Avengers was not easy for some workers to work... especially for those who were deputies to write the story.

Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus, screenwriters of Avengers: Endgame are back to talk with Vanity Fair, the final sacrifice of the Black Widow admitting that you have only one regret in respect of the road choice for the character played by Scarlett Johansson.

“Certainly we thought about it long and was difficult. We knew that we were killing the first hero of the Marvel Universe. Stupidly, we were reminded of the rules for the first film, someone had to fall from that precipice, so we had to decide just who would have done it. Each way you have to love the people you are near, so we couldn't send Steve Rogers and the Hulk. So it was a puzzle of our making, but the resolution seems to be the conclusion of his narrative arc, or if he could sacrifice for his new family, and for half of the universe, for you would have been right.”

To follow McFeely has talked about an alternate version of the scene that would have seen Clint Barton (hawkeye) sacrifice in the place of Natasha. However, this version was not the favorite of the women who were working on the film.

“A large number of women of our crew told us, Hey, we were thinking that maybe hawkeye should go. Don't do it! Do not remove this opportunity! But then I was without words because I think that we would have had a different type of conversation if hawkeye had pushed from the other side. When he jumps on the grenade, I'm very proud of that moment, I have no regrets. The only regret belongs to the second act. Then you simply do not fuck around because you still have a ora'the whole film and you haven't resolved the plot, that is a negative side.”

In spite of the events of Avengers: Endgame the Black Widow will return on the big screen in May 2020 with a film she is completely dedicated and is set in the past of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The story is set right after Captain America: Civil War and will follow Natasha Romanoff as he confronts some ghosts of the past.
