Apple is willing to buy the unit for Modem Intel

Apple is in talks to buy a key section of the business of the modem for smartphones-Intel, a division that is actually closed after Apple and Qualcomm have settled the legal dispute in April.

In Germany, the team of Intel engineers arm of the wireless technology of Infineon, the chip manufacturer has purchased for $ 1.4 billion in 2011. The group is expert in Apple hardware and has provided chip base for the iPhone from 2007 to 2010.

Negotiations are in progress for the last year and could not agree, according to the report. However, if Apple is successful in its bid, the purchase will likely lead to hundreds of engineers veterans within its staff, while the technology giant is working on its own modem 5G.

“We hired external consultants to help us evaluate the strategic options for our business telephony wireless 5G”, said a spokesman for Intel. “We have created value in our portfolio of products, wireless modem, that in our intellectual property: we have received a significant interest for the business but we have nothing more to say at this time”.

The publication notes that some former executives of Intel, who had been assimilated as part of the agreement, Infineon, are now working at Apple. While some have been recruited years ago, others, such as Stefan Wolff, former team manager of modem German Intel, they have arrived in Cupertino in the last few months. In February, Apple has hired the former executive of Intel Umashankar Thyagarajan, an engineer who was thought to play a key role in the development of the modem XMM 8160 5G.

Intel has abandoned the industry modem for smartphones, in April, stating that the way forward in that segment was no longer tenable after Apple and Qualcomm had resolved their legal battle with royalties and licenses. As part of the agreement, Apple has agreed a one-off payment of between $ 4.5 and $ 4.6 billion in exchange for an offer of chip multi-year license agreements of six years.
