Apple explains why iPhone 11 continues to access to the location information

At the beginning of this week, a security researcher has discovered that the iPhone 11 Pro and some iPhone models 11 accessing location services even after the user has blocked the access. After a couple of days of silence, Apple has issued a brief and vague explanation.

The new iphones use the technology, radio Ultra Wide Band (UWB), an industry standard more recent that allows mobile devices to quickly transfer data over short distances using radio spectrum without interfering with other devices.

The company in a statement to KrebsOnSecurity, said that the position controls are related to the new wireless technology integrated in the iPhone, 2019:

“The technology Ultra Wide Band is a technology industry standard, and is subject to the global regulatory requirements that require it to be turned off in certain places. iOS uses location services to determine if iPhone is in these positions prohibited to disable ultra-wideband, and comply with regulations. The management of the compliance of Ultrawide Band and its use of location data are executed entirely on the device, and Apple is not collecting location data of the user.”

Krebs stresses that UWB is prohibited only in some countries, including Argentina, Indonesia and Paraguay, and wonder if it is really necessary for every iPhone checks frequently if it is in one of those areas.

Apple has declared that plans to include a switch in a future update of iOS to disable all the activities of the UWB.
