According to numerous reports on Reddit, Apple's iOS would use a sort of a low-performance mode, with a downclock of the CPU to avoid unexpected reboots of the devices with batteries worn.

The user's Reddit TeckFire has posted the Geekbench results before and after replacing the battery on an iPhone 6s used. Before replacing the battery, the device achieved a score in single-core 1466 and 2512 on the multi-core processor. After it is replaced, Geekbench has instead indicated a score in single-core and 2526 and 4456 in the multi-core processor. The rate of wear of the battery was about 20%.

According to other reports, this “problem” would have occurred also on some of the iPhone 7 and you would link to a news story several months ago about, in fact, the sudden shut down of some of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s. A problem child of excessive power consumption of the chip A8 and A9 on the iPhone whose battery had a high level of wear and tear.

Apple could then have found a “solution” to the problem, with a downclock of the CPU. The company of Cupertino, at the time, has not released any statement on the matter.
