Amazon: investors will vote against the recognition of the face
Investors of Amazon vote to block Rekognition, the controversial algorithm for THE facial recognition that the giant of the ecommerce provides to law enforcement agencies and other government institutions. The argument is essentially the same as expressed at the beginning of the year in an open letter: if they are afraid of the abuse. Precisely, the motion wants Amazon to stop selling Rekognition until an independent third party will not confirm that "causes, or contributes to actual or potential violations of human rights".
The board of directors of Amazon does not support this motion - he even tried to prevent the vote, but was blocked by the SEC. It is true that, even if the motion passed, the practice would impact almost non-existent - the demands of investors are non-binding and are approved very rarely - but at the level of "political" message would be very strong.
According to tests conducted by the American Civil Liberties Union, or ACLU, Rekognition has associated, erroneously, the faces of the 28 members of the US Congress to criminals and/or suspects. The reliability of the instrument is reduced, in particular, with people of color. Amazon, however, claims that the technology has been used in the wrong way, and that when it is on sale (in 2017) have never been confirmed cases of abuse.A lot of the internal memory and good hardware at affordable price?
