Alcohol more lethal than smoking and drugs: in Italy 435mila people dead in 10 years
The alcohol may be regarded as the psychotropic substance most dangerous. Suffice it to take account of the data in the report ‘Survey on alcoholism in Italy’. Specifically, it is the three paths of research, made within the scope of activities provided by the permanent Observatory of Eurispes-Enpam on “Health, social security and legality“.
The alcohol each year causes many more deaths in terms of dependence compared to smoking and synthetic drugs: from 2008 to 2017 are deceased 435mila people due to diseases, accidents, homicides and suicides related to the consumption of this product.
The drink is consumed more and more away from meals. The consumption is especially widespread among the younger members of the population. From the survey Enpam shows that 6 out of 10 italians associate the alcohol with conviviality, lightheartedness, pleasure and relaxation. In short, there is an underestimation of the risk that may result from consumption. In fact, only a quarter of the sample correlates with the loss of control, danger, and escape from the problems. Only 3 out of 10 people is considered a social problem.
The survey reveals that half of the respondents claims to exceed with alcohol, although only ‘sometimes’ (47,7%). But what are the reasons behind this excessive consumption? 28% say they drink to “pleasure”, a quarter “to stay in better with the other”, 23.7% to “relax”, and 9.2% to “address a complicated situation”, 2.2% instead to “react to failure”.
40% of respondents admit to having decided to drive after having drunk a few too many to drink. Eight italians out of ten believe that the State has done little to fight the plague of alcoholism (84,1%), 60% are in favour of a regulation of the consumption.
Italian children begin drinking already at 11 years of age, a percentage that involves half of the adolescents who regularly use alcohol. Only 2 out of 10 are non-drinkers. The alcoholic beverage that is greater preference among young people is beer, followed by wine, shottini and spirits.
