Video games may have been formerly known as a nerdy hobby, but they have since grown to be a global industry. Everyone is playing games in some capacity, whether that is console or mobile games on their smartphone. With the advanced technology backing them, games today are simply too fun to ignore for celebrities, musicians, athletes, and everyone else. Here are some famous gamers that you may not have known.
Gordon Hayward is an exceptionally talented NBA player. His skills as a forward helped secure strong basketball odds for the Boston Celtics through the recent NBA playoffs. He is well known in the sport, and his passion for the video game world outside of it has become his trademark. Growing up, Hayward’s time was split between basketball and video games and the two passions consumed him for most of his teenage years.
Hayward enjoys many different genres of games from sports, to shooters or adventure titles. In 2019, when he was unfortunately sidelined from basketball with a serious injury, he dove back into his love for video games to keep his spirits up while he was recovering and stuck at home. Video games allowed him to stay in touch with his friends around the country. Hayward’s current favorite games are varied and include Hearthstone, Apex Legends, and of course, the NBA 2K series.
Over his extensive career, Jack Black has worn many hats including actor, director, musician, comedian, and now video game streamer can be added to this list as well. Demonstrating that he can keep up with current trends, Black jumped on this new industry in 2018 and hasn’t looked back since. Most of his content includes old arcade games and retro titles that help him to standout amongst the crowded world of video game streamers. He regularly has back-and-forth disputes on social media with other famous streamers like Tyler “Ninja” Belvins as well.
Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson
Jack Black is far from the only celebrity video game streamer out there. Also joining the ranks of this exciting new industry is the former UFC Flyweight Champion, Demetrious Johnson. His obsession with video games led him to start Mighty Gaming, a brand he is building on Twitch, Youtube and other streaming platforms.
Johnson is equally as interested in the entertainment and competitive side of video games and regularly plays top esports titles like Fortnite and Dota 2, as well as MMORPGs like World of Warcraft. He is also a regular at video game conventions like E3 and has stated that once he retires from his dominant career in MMA, he’ll be focusing on video games full time.
Samuel L. Jackson
Samuel L. Jackson is one of the most prolific American actors of all time. As such, his likeness has appeared in numerous game adaptations over the years, like 2004’s The Incredibles and 2010’s Iron Man 2. However, his biggest video game role is absolutely Officer Tenpenny, one of the main antagonists of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
While he may appear in and do voicework for several games, it’s not just work for him. Jackson is also an outright video game fan. His early love was for vintage titles like Pong and Space Invaders, so he can really appreciate how far the industry has come with his newer favorites Assassin’s Creed and Call of Duty.
You can look to the Instagram of just about any rapper you can name and I’m sure you will find evidence of a healthy gaming hobby. These rappers just cannot stay away from their games. It must be all the free time they have. In the long list of musicians you can mention, rapper Danny Brown stands out. He has been vocal about his love for video games for over a decade and his dedication is impressive.
Brown once said that all he does is “rap and play video games.” When he’s on tour, he brings the latest games with him and plays in his hi-tech setup on his tour bus. Furthermore, he always makes sure he has his portable devices like a Nintendo Switch on hand as well. While other rappers mainly focus on FPS and sports games, Brown mixes it up and enjoys many different genres like RPGs and platformers.
