Until a few years ago the configuration of the wireless networks in large homes was not easy and immediate. The arrival of the systems mesh has revolutionized this world and has made access to a fast and stable connection to everyone. Today we are going to see the solution designed by the brand eero, which was acquired by Amazon in 2019, which is proposed as a Wi-Fi home easy to install even by those who are unfamiliar with this kind of products.

Amazon eero is a wifi mesh of medium-low: it is not the cheapest on the market but has not of features so advanced as to place it among the most expensive. This classification is also reflected in the design and construction because it is made entirely of plastic, but the material is still of good quality.

The system is composed of 3 main nodes identical that look like small white cubes, with the edges slightly rounded. I have to say that for my taste are rather pleasant and discrete: they are not too flashy and don’t attract excessively attention.

There is a black version, we will have to make that more clear, using a glossy plastic on the top, it tends to get dirty easily and catch a lot of dust. To the above we also find the brand logo eero and a small status led / notification. The light played is very strong, and it is convenient for the initial configurations. I can’t stand having lights or small led lights at night, especially in the bedroom, but luckily you can turn it off via the application.

I appreciated the equipment of the rear ports because on each node there are two gigabit Ethernet and a power connector Type C. The latter is particularly convenient for several reasons: it is small and compact, the cable connects in both directions (suitable to the less experienced, who often had problems with ports micro-USB), and potentially you could also replace with a power supply of the third party in the event that the original should break or damage.

Seeing the port Type C on the back I thought I would be able to use a node eero simply can be powered via the USB port of the PC. Unfortunately this is not possible because the original power supply unit is 15W while the ports of my computer are able to deliver a maximum of 5W, which is well below what is provided by the standard setup. Such detail is to keep in mind in case you change the original cable, because you will need to buy one powerful enough to support the router.

The installation of the WiFi system Mesh eero fully reflects the type of audience for the product: in the first configuration and the subsequent adjustments can be made only through the smartphone. Those who prefer to go through a web interface, the desktop will have a dry mouth and there is no way to bypass this obstacle.

I do not think it is a problem of particular importance, because each step is simple and explained in detail. Once we have registered or logged in with our account, eero we will be able to proceed with the installation. The first screens show us with accuracy what will be the components to keep on hand during the configuration:

  • Gateway eero
  • Power cable
  • Ethernet cable
  • Modem

Before setting up names and passwords of the network, we connect the main gateway to the modem provided by our telephone provider. There is no difference between the various nodes, they are all the same and capable of functioning as a main. The entire process is guided with great simplicity and the information provided take into consideration the more unusual forms of internet connection as a modem-router combined, wired, and whatever else.

Once identified, the root node will ask us to indicate in that part of the house it is positioned. Then, we will proceed with the rename the network and set a password. After you have created the network, the system will propose to add the other nodes, indicating to us where and how to best position the various devices so as to create the largest network possible and with the connection more powerful.

The application is one of the strengths of the Wifi eero because with this we will be able to change several parameters, and a thorough on our home network. The home page shows what components it is composed of the network and indicates which device is connected through the cable to the network and which instead is simply a secondary node. By clicking on each node we can change the position, turn off the led light and above all, see which devices are connected.

By selecting the device you can change its name, pause it, or block it totally from the network. From here, we can set up a profile, a kind of parental control is specific to each device used: can be regular breaks scheduled to pause the internet at night, or directly block a type of content to not show inappropriate material to younger members of the family.

In the tab “Activities” are shown the speed of the network, on the “Discover” there are some additional functions, such as the eero Labs where you are shown a preview of some of the functions in phase beta prototype. Finally, the tab settings you can enable the IPv6 standard, to set a custom DNS, update the firmware of the nodes, and enable notifications, connection to the network of a new device.

The functions are many, but all very simple and positioned in an orderly manner. The navigation in the application is pleasant and hardly we can see in the screens of the strange where do not know where to put a hand. All this is made accessible also for the less experienced user that in the Home tab you can easily see the progress of the network and the devices connected to it, the only things you really need.

There is also the enable guest network that quickly creates an additional connection for quick connection on the part of the guests. From here you can also share a QR code to facilitate mating with the various devices. The brand eero was acquired by Amazon last year, not missing then the support of the voice assistant, Alexa, and recently, also the integration with HomeKit Apple.

From the point of view of the performance is not the best mesh, but it is discreet for those who have a great house, and little experience with such devices. There is no compatibility with the new standard 802.11 ax (also known as WiFi 6), but you take advantage of the most common AC. It is a system that is only dual band so there is a bandwidth dedicated to the connection between the nodes and the signal is shared with the network you just created.

According to Amazon the system eero manages to cover with 3 nodes a surface of 460 square meters. The base model we tested is able to offer 550 Mbps of speed on single node and 350 Mbps with the package-3. The performance is in line with what declared by the company but in the event that are not sufficient for your needs then it is also available in a Pro model capable of reaching 1 Gbps on a single node, and 550 Mbps on the package-3.

Ultimately Amazon eero is an interesting solution for those who have great needs but they need a simple WiFi network mesh that works well, is stable and does not give problems once configured. Currently, the single node is being sold on Amazon at 109 euros and it rises to 279 euros for the package-3. The price is adequate to the characteristics, even if in the same price range you can find solutions a little more personable. But for the less advanced users who do not have a great familiarity with these technologies Eero is a good choice.
