Microsoft has released Windows File Recovery software, a proprietary tool designed to recover documents accidentally deleted. The program has a graphical interface – the command lines must be inserted through the terminal – and is able to restore the files from various locations – hard disks, USB drives or even SD cards.
In the network case (by the numerous apps that perform the same task and, just as these, even the Microsoft software allows to select which file we want to trace by setting the search to a certain file extension. The list of supported formats is long , and currently it is possible to recover images as JPG, PNG, MP4 video, MP3 audio, or even Word and PowerPoint documents.
The effectiveness of the programme is highest if it is started a few moments after the cancellation: the more you run out quickly and the greater the possibility of return in possession of the lost document. There are different modes and the default is programmed to work best with the NTFS file system: useful for recover files from corrupted or just reset. The signature mode it supports also the memories that are formatted in FAT, exFAT, and ReFS.
The application allows to perform restore operations only on a partition that is external, you will then be able to recover files deleted from the desktop in the same position: you will have to rely necessarily on an external medium, such as a USB stick. At the end of the operation is provided to a log with some information about the data that we were able to track down and those that remained corrupt, for always.
Microsoft has introduced a similar function in previous versions of Windows 10, but it was only available to those who have enabled file history, which by default is off.
