On the first of April – and it was not a joke – we have published review of the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro , which occupies the top step of the new range of smartphones of the chinese company. A product that has proved to be very interesting, complete and appearance and premium performance, such as its positioning. Well this I 10 Pro has a brother equally interesting, almost twin, but characterized by a much lower cost. I am talking about I 10 that loses the term Pro, and the optical zoom but also has a bigger battery and a price up to 200 euro lower.
In this review I want to highlight what these differences are important in day to day use, and which is the product of the family Mi 10 to buy at this time.
- DESIGN AND MATERIALS
- SOFTWARE AND AUTONOMY
If I put I 10 and I 10 Pro next to one another without tell you nothing, probably fatichereste to distinguish them. If you do not know that the Pro model is the one with the back cover, matt finish, be able to identify them is impossible. For Me 10 this is absolutely a good and a first point in favour, because this year, Xiaomi has put the maximum attention in the choice of materials and details of its top of the range. Already by the time the company has accustomed us to the devices very well kept, but the grip these products have really the sensation to have your hands smartphone of the highest level.
The seamless all glass is solid, the parts are well assembled, and the Gorilla Glass that covers the front and back helps to reduce the risk of breakage and scratches. The frame is made of a metal material, in Mi 10 is polished as the rest of the smartphone and has the physical buttons for power and volume adjustment, the microphone, the USB Type-C 2.0, the infrared sensor and the double-speaker. The Italian version also has a tray for the SIM card format nano that can accommodate a single card. In our country, in fact, comes only with single SIM.
It lacks the audio jack, a rarity on smartphones top of the range and we do not have certifications IPxx that attest to their resistance to infiltration of liquids. Xiaomi has used, however, a coating of nanoparticles and water-repellent, as well as seals on all connectors to ensure protection from splashes and drops of water.
Speaking of ergonomics, we have the size exactly the same as Me 10 Pro and a weight, for both, of 208 grams. It is definitely not a smartphone handy, but now it is really difficult to find a top of the range that you can use with one hand. I always recommend, both for your convenience and for stability, use with both hands.
And I will close with two quick notes regarding the vibration and the ngerprint sensor. As regards the first, I can tell you that it offers a feedback very pleasant, dry, strong at the right point and adjustable on many, many levels of intensity. The sensor for the recognition of fingerprints is inserted below the display and her work is always precise and quick, a safety and security of all the senses.
I 10 is equipped with a AMOLED screen from 6.67 inches diagonal with a resolution of fullHD+ and refresh rate of 90Hz. A great panel, with a density sufficient to render indistinguishable the pixels with the naked eye, and characterized by a contrast of high and brilliant colors. As already said, for Me 10 Pro, there are products on the market with resolutions and refresh rates that high, but I find that in everyday use the differences with the latter are difficult to notice. In my opinion, the combination used in these Me 10 remains, therefore, a compromise is very sensible that it also allows you to gain a little autonomy.
In practice however, we have a display capable of amaze since the first ignition. The quality of the unit used on this product is clear and preserves all the best features of the AMOLED display combined with very good colour fidelity. Pointless to spend too many words on contrast and black depth, while I can tell you that we have a maximum brightness constant over the whole screen equal to about 500 cd/m, with peaks that reach to touch 800 nits in the content playback HDR – are supported according to the standard HDR10.
As noted on the I 10 Pro, I was also amazed at the amount of adjustments available in the settings of the display. There are 6 different presets, 3 basic and 3 advanced, in addition to the opportunity to work on many of the parameters individually. This is probably one of the most complete from this point of view.
For the measurement with the colorimeter – which you can see the results above – I used the Color mode of the Original that offers a precision enviable in color reproduction. The delta And the average are in fact less than 3, both for gray-scale for the colors. Recall that 3 is the reference value below which the human eye is not able to recognize differences with respect to the hue that sets the standard.
A great display and then that goes hand in hand in offering a multimedia experience that is extremely satisfying with a speaker of the highest quality. The speakers are the same to Me 10 Pro and they are placed here symmetrically. Thanks to this we have a well-balanced audio, with a good body and a discreet sharpness on high frequency. There are no distortion and the volume is very high. The resonance is 1.0 cc against l’1.2 cc of I 10 Pro but the differences are not so obvious.
The compartment camera, is the element that marks the biggest differences compared to the higher model in the range. The modules on the rear are always 4, but only the main one is equal in the two solutions. On this I 10 we have then the main camera that is equipped with sensor Samsung 108 megapixels and lens with aperture of f/1.7, with the ultra wide equivalent 12 mm combined sensor 13 megapixel camera, and other sensors 2-megapixel dedicated respectively to the macro and to the collection of information on depth of field. So there is no Zoom lens and 2X magnification available by default in the camera interface you get croppando the main sensor.
View Full Screen
The camera standard is substantially identical to that of I 10 Pro. Indeed, there is no only the laser focus but I assure you that passing from one to the other to not notice important differences from this point of view. The photos taken with this module are very good and by default, it will take a 25 megapixel camera (to take the 108 we must go to the dedicated mode). The color rendition is faithful to the reality for white balance and brightness, contrast is good and sharpness also. The HDR is effective and can resolve situations of backlight is also very complicated.I invite you to just pay attention to the focus point. The date aperture of the lens, in fact, the depth of field is minimal , and then you may run the risk of having to fire only a portion of the subject.
Taking in the evening, or in low light, there is help on the night mode which is only available for the main module and that lets you get good pictures even in unfavorable situations. The focus remains fast enough and I especially enjoyed two aspects. The first is the white balance, faithful to reality, and the second is the management of the direct light sources.
Night mode is not available, unfortunately, for the wide angle camera. In the presence of very little light, so my advice is to use this lens only in situations where it is strictly necessary. Usually, in fact, the photos taken in difficult situations are not sharp, with details a little bit coated and good to use social but nothing more. We hope that a future update will bring the night mode on this form.
The situation improves clearly of the day when the photos taken with the wide-angle lens are beautiful-sharp and always able to offer you bright colors and good management of lights and shadows, especially when we activate the HDR. I very much appreciated the ability of the software to correct the distortions due to the amplitude of the angle of vision. In case you are instead of the lovers of the “barrel”, you can also turn off the distortion correction within the camera settings.
Finally, it is right to mention also the camera Macro , which is still there, even if it is used rarely. As already said other times, if I were obliged to try it probably would never have used. For this reason I would have far preferred a solution like the one of Me 10 Pro, which uses the wide-angle lens for macro pictures and frees a slot for a Zoom lens. By doing so, however, the differences would have been even smaller at the expense of the Pro model and its price.
From the front you’ll find a camera with the sensor from 20 megapixel exactly identical to that of I 10 Pro. The selfie taken are good in most situations, even if the lens is not very bright does not allow you to have the best performance in low light. In short, in the evening, make sure you have the face is sufficiently illuminated to have results still good, even in difficult situations. There is the portrait mode, which works quite well and allows you to activate a series of photographic filters, preset effects are nice.
And we close the chapter on camera talking about video that can be recorded at a maximum resolution of 8K at 30 fps. Recording at this resolution, we have very clear images, good speed and accuracy of the focus and management of lights best. The problem is that the stabilization is not at the top, and with 30 fps, this detail is highlighted, and you notice the most. For this reason my advice is to always turn in 4K at 60 fps for the most fluid video and seemingly more stable.
The recording of video in 8K is possible also thanks to the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 865chipset, top of the range of the american company. In this smartphone the SoC in question is then paired with 8 GB of RAM DDR5 and a 128 or 256 GB of storage memory UFS 3.0. In short, a portfolio of hardware that leaves very little space for criticism and allows us to get the performance of a very high level.
I went directly from I 10 Pro I 10, until a short time ago, I used a OnePlus 7T Pro and I can tell you that I don’t feel the lack. The reactivity is excellent and the fluidity of the animation is more than satisfactory, so as not to regret what, however, I consider a reference in this field.

The implementation work of this chipset is at the top, and also testifies to the fact that, despite all this power, I 10 never warms never, not even under the load during updates, and with an intense exchange of data. In short, it is difficult to ask more and I believe that at the base there is a very good job of Qualcomm, which will bring all top of the range of 2020 to have excellent performance at every juncture.
A SoC that is extremely complete, even with regard to the connectivity. There is then the support for the 5G, WiFi ax of the last generation, NFC, Bluetooth 5.1, IR and GPS full. The reception is always very good, I have never been in trouble and I could see how in some situations, a parity of the general conditions, the face also better than some competitors. Quality of reception that is coupled to an audio call that is always sharp and true, both with regard to the capsule headset to the speakerphone.
All of this is supported by a software becoming more mature. On board I 10 obviously we have a Android, updated to his latest release, and customized with the MIUI 11.0.9. I said to the Pro, and here again, the software has always been one of the weak points of the chinese products, but for some time this part, the efforts made by different manufacturers are beginning to bear fruit.
The responsiveness and optimization I have already talked about but in reality they are not the only parameters to consider and not even the only ones to be improved. The software has been lightened by removing many of the annoying bloatware, remaining apps are essential, and the design of the interface is now more clean and simple. Even items such as the pull-down notifications and settings have been revised, reorganized, and made more simple to navigate. In general, everything is more stable and pleasant to use.
A work of optimization of the software that produced positive effects also on’autonomy and their talking about this aspect we can find another small difference compared to the I 10 Pro. The battery of the Mi 10 is 4780 mAh, about 280 in most of the Pro model. We do not speak, obviously, a huge difference, in terms of time-of-use translates into a little less than an hour, but it’s still an increase and as such a point in its favor. Of course, you get to the evening without any problems , and if used sparingly, maybe on the weekend, we can think of to tackle the second day in a row without having to load.
To conclude, there is the quick charge to 30W with cable and also supports charging wireless always at 30W even with third party shippers. But Xiaomi did not want to miss anything, and then we can also activate the reverse charging that can recharge the batteries accessories and the like using on the back cover.
Here we come to the time to pull the sums and then we try to answer the initial question. He will be the product to buy in the new family of smartphones top of the range Xiaomi? According to me, yes. I 10 in the version between 8 and 128 is at this time the product makes more sense between the I 10 available, and the reason is to be found mainly in the price, or 799,99 euros. Let’s talk about 100 euros less than the version 8-256 GB; risparmiabilissimi since for 90% of users, and perhaps more than 128 GB of internal memory are more than sufficient, even if not expandable.
Having had the good fortune to try in sequence I 10 Pro and Me 10 I can tell you that, also with respect to the model technically superior, the differences on paper don’t translate into an experience so different as to justify the 200 euro more than the older brother.
The biggest change is in the cameras, but the main and most used of all is identical. The wide-angle lens has a lower resolution but still there is and for the few times you’ll use it still has a decent job. It lacks the optical zoom is 2X and the hybrid up to 10X, but the latter, like the macro, is used even less of the wide angle and the 2X magnification obtained croppando the sensor 108 megapixels doesn’t have much to envy to the optical of I 10 Pro.

In short, I can safely say that, considering the current price difference, the model that I recommend is this 10 in the version with 128 GB of storage. All, of course, pending the evolution of the street price. In the event that you arrive to find the two models with a difference of less than 100 euro, in fact, I 10 Pro would be my favorite to make the final choice.
- Xiaomi Mi 10 is available online from Amazon Marketplace for 800 euros.
