Among the productivity suites that offer the user the possibility to use a set of applications, desktop, web, or mobile, to create content, such as text documents, graphs, spreadsheets, presentations, and anything else Microsoft Office is definitely one of the most successful programs in the world. According to estimates, in the world there are over a billion people who use it on a daily basis. The neo of this tool is not to be free and accessible to all.
To work around this “problem”, giving the possibility to anyone to use the services almost indispensable, such as those offered by the three tools in the suite of the house of Redmond is the most well-known and used, such as Word, PowerPoint and Excel, with the time they were born different alternatives to Microsoft Office free and/or open-source.
The most famous is probably OpenOffice, but not the only one: there are also, for example, Google Drive, Libre Office and WPS Office. The latter software is distributed by the chinese Kingsoft and is formally known as Kingsoft Office.
WPS Office: what it is and what it offers
Founded in 1989, Kingsoft Office is active worldwide in the development of software solutions for the office, as well as in the creation of productivity applications for the consumer market and the business. With over 1 billion registered users worldwide (over 200 countries) and 100 million active users each month, its flagship product WPS Office is one of the office packages cross-platform is among the most famous in the world.
The product has had a long history of development and success in China with the name “WPS” and “WPS Office”. For some time, Kingsoft has named the suite “KSOffice”, in an attempt to get a foothold in the international market, but then it is back to the “WPS Office”. It is a suite Office all-in-one that integrates Word, PDF, Excel, PowerPoint, Modules, as well as the Calendar, Gallery templates, and Sharing online.

The name WPS Office is born, explains the same manufacturer, as an acronym for Writer, Presentation and Spreadsheets, to indicate, respectively, the three main tools that it includes: software word processor (a free alternative to Microsoft Word), the tool that allows the creation of presentations (a free alternative to Microsoft Power Point) and the program for the management and creation of spreadsheets (alternative to Microsoft Excel). To these we add the management features of the PDF, OCR, to convert PDF and images into text documents, file repair and other powerful tools.
WPS Office: the functions and formats supported
WPS Office has the enormous advantage of work very well also on smartphones, 100% compatible both on the device Android devices with the installed operating system of Apple iOS, such as iPhone, iPad, and iPad Touch. WPS Office: how to customize the interface
The use of this software is fairly simple and intuitive, especially if you’re already familiar with a suite of this type. - the introduction of the Writer to a new Reading View (activated from the status bar), and a new Navigation Panel in the menu “View”;
- the introduction of the WPS Spreadsheets of support for multi-sheet date merge.
How to Download WPS Office
As mentioned, WPS Office is available for all mainstream operating systems, such as Windows, MacOS, Linux, Android and iOS and is also available in a web browser, to allow a shared work, maybe in smart mode working, easier.
The download of the software is available on the official website, choosing the version that best suits your needs and operating system in use:
- WPS Office for PC, the download is free, the dimensions are reduced and it offers full support for the PDF;

- WPS Office for Android, if you want to take advantage of the full potential of mobile working;
- WPS Office for iOS, for have a free tool on the Apple device that transforms an iPhone into a small portable office;

The base version free and is called WPS Office Free, versions, the most complete, available on a subscription basis, in each case cheaper than the one proposed by Microsoft, are two: WPS Office Premium and WPS Office Professional.
The mobile version for Android and iOS supports:
- the ability to open documents in Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and PDF files, preserving the original formatting;
- the creation of text documents, memos, spreadsheets, and presentations-saving them in various file formats;

Adobe PDF files can be converted into DOC/DOCX quickly and easily. It is also possible to split or merge the pages for the PDF conversion.
Then there is also a paid version of WPS Office that allows the recovery of accidentally deleted files, even a USB flash disk, removable hard disk, an SD card, a TFcard or mobile devices, named’ WPS Data Recovery Master.
WPS Office Italian
If we want to find a fault with this antagonist of Microsoft Office, there is to not have theinterface translated in all the languages, for example, is not available in Italian. It must be said, however, that the team “WPS ” Italian” has long engaged in translating the entire suite in our language, both for Windows and Linux, the project aimed to develop an interface in Italian language but, unfortunately, has been abandoned, at least for the moment.
This in terms of the interface, by downloading the version WPS Office Multi-Language, the language supported for the Spell Check, or the spell correction automatically, also include the Italian, in addition to Catalan, Croatian, Czech, Dutch, English, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, khmer, Lithuanian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, and Ukrainian.
The interface of WPS Office is also available in different languages (51 to be precise, in 8 languages with WPS to a PC, 46 languages with WPS for Android), including English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, chinese, indonesian, Polish and even Russian.
To change the language of the interface just go to the start screen, choose the menu item “Options”, then go to the section dedicated to languages, “Languages”. Alternatively you can go into the menu “Tools“, by pressing on the arrow at the top left (near the writing Writer, Presentation or Spreadsheets) and choose the option “Switch Language“.
WPS Office allows you to change the spell check default English (USA) in another language. To do this you need to:
- open an existing document with WPS Writer;
- in the classic interface, go to “Tools” and choose the item “Set Language“.
At this point, to change the vocabulary for the spelling check, you just have to choose the Italian and click on the button “Set Default” to make it the main language to use for spell checking of the document.
To change the language used by the spell checkerafter you select the options menu from the start page, you can also go to the item “Spell Check”. To verify the correct spelling of the document, just press the key “F7”, or alternatively, go back to the “Tools” menu and select “Check Spell”. In case of errors the system will highlight them and propose alternative solutions.
In case you have installed a version of WPS Office Multi-Language, to manually install a dictionary Italian third-party to use for the check spelling in your document, go to the community page WPS dedicated to the various dictionaries and to download the Italian version in format .ZIP. At this point you will need to create the directory “en_us” in the folder in the path, Kingsoft > WPS Office > (version) > office6 > dicts > spellcheck, then you will have to unzip the folder in the directory you created.
Then to set the Italian language as default language in WPS Office, with regard to the spelling checker, you must go into “Options” from the home screen, or from the item “Tools”. At this point, you first click on the “Spell Check”, then click “Custom Dictionaries”.
In the popup that opens you will need to at this point select the option to “Add”.
Then from the folder where you unpacked the ZIP, highlight the file main.dec. At this point, by clicking on the button “Set Default”, you will have the Italian dictionary is set by default to check spelling of the document.
